Convert the discount into money

Thirty percent of $100 is $30, so subtracting the discount leaves $70. The same relationship works for any original price.

For quick mental math, paying after 30% off is the same as paying 70% of the original price.

02

Stacked discounts are different

A 30% discount followed by another 10% discount does not equal 40% off the original price. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price.

03

Quick questions.

What is 30% off $80?

The discount is $24, leaving $56 before taxes or fees.

Is 30% off plus 10% off the same as 40%?

No. Sequential discounts compound.
