Savings buffer answer

How much should my emergency fund be?

A practical way to set a target is to multiply essential monthly expenses by the number of months you want the fund to cover. The right number of months depends on your own income stability, obligations and comfort level.

Try the numbers

Run the scenario.

The calculator is prefilled with the example above. Change any input and the result updates immediately in your browser.

  • Use essential expenses rather than total lifestyle spending if you want a survival-budget estimate.
  • The number of months is a personal planning assumption, not a universal rule.
  • Subtract existing emergency savings to see the remaining gap.
  • Keep accessibility and liquidity in mind separately from the arithmetic.

01

Build the target from expenses

Start with the monthly amount you would need to cover housing, food, utilities, transport, insurance and other essential obligations. Multiply that amount by the number of months you want covered.

The calculator can then compare the target with what you have already set aside.

02

Choose the month target deliberately

Someone with variable income may prefer a different buffer than someone with stable income and low fixed costs. NumLuma does not impose one universal emergency-fund rule; it makes the assumption explicit so you can test it.

03

Quick questions.

Should I use three or six months?

That is a personal planning choice. The calculator lets you test either assumption.

Does this decide where I should keep the money?

No. It only calculates the target amount.
