What is 20% off $150?

Twenty percent of $150 is $30, so 20% off $150 leaves a sale price of $120 before taxes or other fees.

  • Discount amount = original price × discount rate.
  • Final price = original price − discount amount.
  • Sales tax is separate unless the store states otherwise.
  • Sequential discounts are not the same as adding percentages together.

01

Find the discount amount first

Convert 20% to 0.20 and multiply by $150. The discount is $30. Subtracting that from the original price gives $120.

The same steps work for any price and discount percentage.

02

Be careful with stacked discounts

A second discount is normally applied to the already-discounted price. For example, 20% off followed by 10% off is not the same as a single 30% discount.

03

Quick questions.

Is tax included in the $120?

No. The example is the discounted price before any applicable tax or fees.

Is 20% off the same as paying 80%?

Yes. A 20% reduction leaves 80% of the original price.
