What this calculator does
Trip fuel cost is a two-step calculation: divide distance by fuel economy to estimate gallons used, then multiply gallons by the fuel price. The current English-market version uses miles, US MPG and US gallons.
What to know before you use the result
- Gallons used = miles ÷ MPG.
- Fuel cost = gallons used × price per gallon.
- Real-world MPG can differ with speed, traffic, weather, load and driving style.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Mixing imperial gallons with US MPG assumptions.
- Using a dashboard MPG value that does not represent the planned trip conditions.
- Forgetting tolls and other trip expenses when comparing total travel cost.
