What this calculator does

Trip fuel cost is a two-step calculation: divide distance by fuel economy to estimate gallons used, then multiply gallons by the fuel price. The current English-market version uses miles, US MPG and US gallons.

What to know before you use the result

  • Gallons used = miles ÷ MPG.
  • Fuel cost = gallons used × price per gallon.
  • Real-world MPG can differ with speed, traffic, weather, load and driving style.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing imperial gallons with US MPG assumptions.
  • Using a dashboard MPG value that does not represent the planned trip conditions.
  • Forgetting tolls and other trip expenses when comparing total travel cost.

Quick answers

About the fuel cost calculation.

How do I estimate fuel cost for a trip?

Divide trip miles by MPG to estimate gallons, then multiply by the price per US gallon.

Why can actual fuel cost differ?

Fuel economy changes with traffic, speed, terrain, temperature, tire pressure, vehicle load and other conditions.

Does this calculator support kilometers?

This version uses US miles and MPG. The fuel-economy converter can convert between US MPG, km/L and L/100 km; metric trip-cost inputs are planned for localization.

Does this include tolls or maintenance?

No. It estimates fuel only.
