How to read this result

The result is the planned bulk soil volume after your allowance. It does not predict how much the soil will settle or compact after placement.

How to use it

A clear result in a few inputs.

  1. Enter the requested values.Use consistent units and the real values for your scenario.
  2. Read the main result and breakdown.NumLuma recalculates immediately when an input changes.
  3. Check the formula and assumptions.Use the supporting context before making a real-world decision.

What this calculator does

Soil estimates combine area and depth to produce volume. NumLuma converts the entered depth from inches to feet, calculates the rectangular cubic-yard volume and then applies the extra allowance you choose.

What to know before you use the result

  • Settling and compaction can reduce the final filled height after installation.
  • Raised beds with sloped sides or irregular shapes may need a different volume model.
  • Bulk soil and bagged soil use different purchase units, so convert using the package volume when needed.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using planter outside dimensions when thick walls reduce the internal volume.
  • Confusing inches of soil depth with feet.
  • Assuming delivered soil volume and compacted finished volume are identical.

Quick answers

About the soil calculation.

How many cubic yards of soil do I need?

Multiply length by width by depth in feet, divide by 27 and apply any extra allowance you want to include.

Should I add extra soil for settling?

Often yes, but the amount depends on soil type, compaction and the project. Use the allowance field rather than relying on a universal percentage.

Can I use this for a raised bed?

Yes for a rectangular interior volume. Use the inside dimensions of the bed for the most useful estimate.
