What this calculator does

Conversion rate expresses completed conversions as a percentage of the population that had the opportunity to convert. The formula is straightforward, but the result only stays comparable when the definition of both conversions and denominator traffic stays consistent.

What to know before you use the result

  • Conversion rate = conversions ÷ visitors × 100.
  • A conversion can be a sale, lead, signup or another clearly defined action.
  • Use the same traffic scope when comparing pages, campaigns or time periods.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing sessions, users and clicks as though they were the same denominator.
  • Comparing conversion rates built from different conversion definitions.
  • Using attributed conversions from a different reporting window than the traffic count.

Quick answers

About the conversion rate calculation.

What is a conversion rate?

It is the percentage of the measured audience that completed the defined conversion action.

Should I use visitors, sessions or clicks?

Use the denominator that matches your reporting system and keep it consistent across comparisons. NumLuma labels the input as visitors for simplicity.

Can conversion rate exceed 100%?

If one person can complete multiple counted conversions while the denominator is unique visitors, it can. In a one-conversion-per-visitor model, it normally cannot.

Does a higher conversion rate always mean better performance?

Not by itself. Traffic quality, order value, profit and acquisition cost can change the business impact.
