What this calculator does

A percentage discount is calculated from the original price, then subtracted to get the sale price. NumLuma shows both values so you can distinguish “25% off” from the actual amount saved in currency.

What to know before you use the result

  • Savings = original price × discount percentage.
  • Sale price = original price − savings.
  • Sales tax, shipping and stacked discounts are not included unless already reflected in the price.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Subtracting 25 instead of 25% of the price.
  • Applying multiple discounts by simply adding their percentages.
  • Comparing pre-tax and after-tax prices as though they use the same base.

Quick answers

About the discount calculation.

How do I calculate 25% off?

Multiply the original price by 0.25 to find the savings, then subtract that amount from the original price.

Are two 20% discounts the same as 40% off?

No. If discounts are applied sequentially, the second 20% is applied to the already-discounted price, producing a 36% total reduction.

Does this include sales tax?

No. The calculator applies the discount to the price entered and does not add tax.

Can I calculate a price increase with this tool?

Use a percentage or percentage-change calculator for increases; this tool is specifically structured around a discount.
