What this calculator does

Flooring orders are usually based on surface area plus extra material for cuts, damaged pieces and layout. This calculator first finds the room area, then applies the waste percentage you choose so the base measurement and extra material stay separate.

What to know before you use the result

  • Measure the finished floor dimensions, not just a rough room size.
  • Patterned, diagonal or irregular layouts can need more waste than a simple straight layout.
  • Compare the final square footage with the coverage printed on each box or package.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Rounding room dimensions too early.
  • Forgetting alcoves, closets or connected sections.
  • Buying exactly the geometric area with no allowance for cuts or future repairs.

Quick answers

About the flooring calculation.

How much extra flooring should I buy?

There is no universal percentage. Straightforward layouts often need less extra material than diagonal patterns, complex rooms or products with visual matching requirements.

Does this calculator tell me how many boxes to buy?

It gives the required square footage. Divide that by the coverage per box, then round up to a whole box.

Can I add several rooms?

Calculate each room separately and add their areas, or combine rectangular sections before applying one waste allowance if they use the same flooring.

Should closets be included?

Include any space that will receive the same flooring. Exclude areas that will not be covered.
