What this calculator does

Tile quantity depends on both the area being covered and the face area of each tile. NumLuma converts tile dimensions from inches to square feet, estimates the exact tile count, applies your waste allowance and rounds the purchase quantity upward.

What to know before you use the result

  • Use the nominal face dimensions only if they match the coverage you intend to use.
  • Complex layouts and pattern matching can increase offcuts.
  • Whole-tile quantity is rounded upward after waste is applied.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing inches and feet without conversion.
  • Ignoring grout-joint or manufacturer coverage guidance when those affect layout.
  • Using one waste percentage for every pattern and room shape.

Quick answers

About the tile calculation.

How is the number of tiles calculated?

The surface area is divided by the area of one tile, then multiplied by your waste allowance. The final purchase quantity is rounded up to a whole tile.

Should I include waste?

Usually yes for a real project, because cuts, breakage and pattern layout can consume extra pieces. The appropriate percentage depends on the installation.

Can I use this for wall tile?

Yes, as long as the surface area you enter is the area that will actually receive tile.

What if tiles are sold by the box?

Divide the required tile count by the number of tiles per box, or compare the total square footage with box coverage, then round up.
