  3. Check the formula and assumptions.Use the supporting context before making a real-world decision.

What this calculator does

Wall area is based on room perimeter multiplied by wall height, not floor square footage. NumLuma calculates the gross area of four walls and subtracts the door and window area you enter to estimate the net surface available for paint, wallpaper or other finishes.

What to know before you use the result

  • The formula assumes a rectangular room with four walls.
  • Subtract openings only when the level of precision is useful for the material being estimated.
  • Ceilings, accent walls and partial-height finishes should be calculated separately.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Multiplying floor area by wall height instead of using perimeter.
  • Subtracting doors and windows twice when using another tool that already excludes them.
  • Including the ceiling when only wall finish is being estimated.

Quick answers

About the wall area calculation.

How do I calculate wall square footage?

For a rectangular room, multiply 2 × (length + width) by wall height, then subtract the area of openings if desired.

Should I subtract windows and doors for paint?

You can for a more precise estimate, although small openings may be offset by extra paint needed for edges and touch-ups.

Can I use this for wallpaper?

Yes as a starting wall area, but wallpaper roll coverage and pattern repeat also affect the number of rolls needed.
