What this calculator does

Paint estimates become much more useful when the calculator separates four things: the actual paintable area, how many coats you plan to apply, the coverage printed on the paint can, and a small allowance for touch-ups or loss. NumLuma keeps those assumptions visible so you can change them instead of relying on one generic coverage rule.

What to know before you use the result

  • Use paintable wall or ceiling area, not floor area.
  • Coverage per gallon varies by product, surface texture and application method.
  • The whole-gallon figure rounds upward because partial gallons may not match how paint is sold.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting to multiply by the number of coats.
  • Using gross room area without subtracting large doors or windows when precision matters.
  • Assuming the default coverage is more accurate than the product label.

Quick answers

About the paint calculation.

How much does one gallon of paint cover?

Many paints advertise a coverage range per gallon, but the actual figure depends on the product and surface. Use the coverage number on the specific can or technical sheet whenever possible.

Should I add waste to a paint estimate?

A small allowance can help with roller and brush loss, porous surfaces and later touch-ups. The right allowance depends on the project, so NumLuma lets you set it yourself.

Does primer count as a coat of paint?

Primer is normally estimated separately because it has its own coverage rate. If you need primer, calculate it using the primer product's coverage rather than treating it as the same material.

Can I use floor square footage to estimate wall paint?

Not directly. Wall paint depends on wall surface area, which is based on room perimeter and wall height. Use the wall area calculator first if you do not already know the paintable area.
