How to read this result

The roll count is only as accurate as the usable coverage value entered. For patterned wallpaper, prefer manufacturer coverage or strip-layout guidance over nominal roll area.

What this calculator does

Wallpaper is harder to estimate than paint because nominal roll area is not always the same as usable coverage. Pattern repeat, strip length and trimming can reduce the area a roll actually covers, so NumLuma keeps roll coverage editable instead of assuming one universal roll size.

What to know before you use the result

  • Use usable coverage from the specific wallpaper whenever available.
  • Large pattern repeats can reduce the number of full-height strips cut from each roll.
  • Rooms with many corners, openings or short wall sections can create more offcuts.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using nominal roll area as guaranteed usable coverage.
  • Ignoring pattern repeat and matching requirements.
  • Mixing single-roll and double-roll packaging descriptions.

Quick answers

About the wallpaper calculation.

How many wallpaper rolls do I need?

Divide the wall area including your waste allowance by the usable coverage per roll, then round up to whole rolls.

Why is pattern repeat important?

A repeating pattern can force each strip to start at a matching point, creating extra offcut and reducing effective roll coverage.

Should I subtract windows and doors?

For large openings, subtracting them can improve the estimate, but some extra material is still useful for cuts and matching.
